Oh, where do I even begin? India has this unique phenomenon where social law > actual law. Here are things that are 100% legal but will make you feel like a criminal:
1. Marrying after 30 You're not breaking any law. You're just breaking every aunty's heart in a 5-kilometre radius which apparently carries a life sentence of unsolicited advice.
2. Carrying your own groceries into another store You bought those biscuits from D-Mart. You walk into Big Bazaar. Suddenly you're sweating like you smuggled contraband across international borders.
3. Girls having guy friends (and vice versa) Completely legal. But pados wali aunty has already filed a mental FIR, held a neighbourhood tribunal, and delivered the verdict to your parents.
4. Asking someone to return your money You lent it. It's yours. Yet somehow, YOU feel like the villain for asking.
5. Flushing the toilet at 2 AM Not illegal. Not immoral. But the echo at night makes it feel like you've committed a felony against the entire apartment building.
6. Having something in your pocket inside a store that sells the same thing You walk in with your own earphones. The security guard's eyes narrow. You suddenly forget your own name.
7. Smiling at your phone in public You got a funny meme. That's it. But the stares make you feel like you're plotting something suspicious.
8. Breaking a "kasam" your mom made you take Not legally binding. Not enforceable in any court. Yet somehow, the guilt is worse than actual jail.
9. Asking a salesperson all your questions and leaving without buying You were just browsing! Perfectly legal! But you still apologise three times on your way out and avoid eye contact.
10. Uploading a sad status as a teenager Legal. Normal. Human. But it triggers a family-wide emergency response faster than a fire alarm.
The real answer? In India, we have two parallel legal systems one in the Constitution, and one enforced by society, relatives, and neighbours. The second one has no written laws, no courts, but somehow everyone knows exactly when you've violated it.
