I've asked myself this a hundred times.

I've asked myself this a hundred times.

How do I stop doing things I don't actually want to do? Things that drain me, bore me, or just feel completely wrong for who I am but I keep doing them anyway.

Obligation. Guilt. Fear of what people will think.

That's usually the honest answer.

Nobody really sits down one day and decides to fill their life with things they hate. It happens slowly. You say yes once because it seems harmless. Then yes again because you don't want to disappoint someone. And before you know it your entire week is full of things that have nothing to do with who you are or what you actually want.

I think the first step is just getting honest about it.

Not dramatic. Not a big life overhaul. Just sitting with yourself for ten minutes and asking do I actually want to do this, or am I doing it for someone else's comfort?

Most of the time the answer is pretty clear.

The harder part is acting on it.

Because stopping something you don't like usually means letting someone down. Or having an uncomfortable conversation. Or accepting that not everyone will understand your choices.

That's the real cost. And most people aren't willing to pay it so they just keep going.

But here's what I've noticed every time I've said no to something that wasn't right for me, I didn't regret it. Not once. The discomfort of saying no lasts a day maybe. The resentment of saying yes when you meant no? That lingers much longer.

You don't have to quit everything overnight.

Just start noticing. Start being honest.

One no at a time.
