Improving your life doesn’t have to be about making one big gesture. Instead, it’s something you can constantly work on—and it typically comes down to the small things you do every day.
No more phone, tablet, or computer in bed. This is a big one, which most people don’t even realize harms their sleep and productivity. Short-wavelength blue light plays an important role in determining your mood, energy level, and sleep quality. In the morning, sunlight contains high concentrations of this blue light. When your eyes are exposed to it directly, it halts production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and makes you feel alert. In the afternoon, the sun’s rays lose their blue light, which allows your body to produce melatonin and this starts making you sleepy. By the evening, your brain doesn’t expect any blue light exposure and is very sensitive to it. Most of our favorite evening devices—laptops, tablets, and mobile phones—emit short-wavelength blue light brightly and right in your face. This exposure impairs melatonin production and interferes with your ability to fall asleep, as well as with the quality of your sleep once you do nod off. Get started, even though you might fail. Most writers spend countless hours brainstorming their characters and plots, and they even write page after page that they know they’ll never include in the books. They do this because they know that ideas need time to develop. We tend to freeze up when it’s time to get started because we know that our ideas aren’t perfect and that what we produce might not be any good. But how can you ever produce something great if you don’t get started and give your ideas time to evolve? Do something that reminds you who you are. We all joke about having “me” time, but what is that, really? Want to reach a goal? Think towards the finish line. A sprinter’s mental image is of crossing the finish line first, and they see their competitors coming in at a very distant second. Before a putt is taken, the golfer has already drawn a mental picture of the path the ball will take and visualizes it going into the hole. EAT BETTER.
It’s hard to be happy when your body isn’t feeling its best. If want to start feeling better immediately, all you have to do is make small changes to the type of fuel you use. The advice is simple, and it’s to eat more natural, whole foods and less processed ones. Drink water and green tea and fewer sodas and energy drinks. It doesn’t have to be hard or an all or nothing proposition to create new habits. Start by adding one good food and eliminating one bad.
FORGIVE YOURSELF.
We all make mistakes; it is part of life. Happy people forgive themselves for the mistakes they made yesterday and vow to try harder today. They don’t dwell, and they don’t punish themselves. They simply try to be a better version of themselves today, and cultivate helpful habits that will make them a better person.
